I'm in the mood to blog, so I thought I would log on and give you all an update.
I was thinking and I realized that up until this point we have talked a lot about who kMw is as a band, but barely at all about who each of us is as an individual.
So . . . we decided that we would each write our own blog to let you all get to know us. Since, I'm already logged on (this is Katie, btw) I'll go first and I'll have to remind Willy to write his blog later. (he has a very short memory sometimes). lol.
I guess I will start by saying HELLO Everybody! My name is Katie Lynne McKenna. I'm 19 years old and live in St. Louis, MO.
One thing you should know about me is that I've wanted to be a singer pretty much my entire life. I decided when I was about 5 that I wanted to be a country music singer. While I've since changed to pop rock music, my dream to perform onstage has stayed the same.
I started playing guitar junior year of high school. My first year of lessons didn't go so well and I quit, but after finding a new teacher, I started playing again and Willy decided to start playing as well. I'm so glad I made the switch, especially since our current guitar teacher has been such a driving force in our music! He has helped us write the music for all of our songs and is helping us arrange open mic nights to practice playing.
I've written all of the lyrics to all of our songs thus far. I wrote my first song in Fall of 2007. I was trying to process this bad experience I had with a guy I had a crush on and just wanted to vent what I was feeling. I was really worried about letting anybody read my lyrics at first, so I sent them to only one person: my best friend Jeannette. She was really supportive and said she really liked them and it's thanks to her support that I had the courage to keep writing and to share my lyrics. I started writing a LOT and have gotten really into writing lyrics.
The first song that we put music to was "We're Gonna Be Famous" which has kind of become our theme song. The song has a lot of sentimental value since it was our first original song and the first song we ever recorded. It's also the only song we've made a music video for. (You can check it out on our YouTube page).
For me, writing is incredibly therapeutic. It's kind of like just letting go of all the stress and emotion that builds up and putting all of that energy into a creative medium.
I love going to concerts and listening to other artists' music and using that for inspiration for my own writing. After I go to a really good concert, I love to come home and just pour out new lyrics. I wrote the lyrics for "You Don't Know" after a Jonas Brothers/Rooney Concert in February 2008.
Music is a HUGE part of my life, but I do have other hobbies. I would love to be a fashion designer & have my own fashion line or be a costume designer and I would love to direct movies someday. I also love dance and took ballet, tap and jazz for 12 years and hip hop for 3 years and play piano.
I tend to be a really random person, so here are some random facts about me:
- My favorite celebrities are Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, and Reese Witherspoon.
- My favorite color is PINK.
- I LOVE Juicy Couture, Dooney & Bourke, and Ed Hardy!!
- I can never pick my favorite movie - I have like 20. I love High School Musical, Hairspray, Raise Your Voice, Pirates of the Caribbean, National Treasure, Tommy Boy, Along Came Polly, Music & Lyrics, Halloweentown. I like pretty much every kind of movie EXCEPT scary movies!!
- I'm a Disney maniac! Walt Disney is my hero and I love going to Disney World (and Land).
- My favorite candy is Goofy's Candy Co.'s Sour Gummies. (Pick them up the next time you're at a Disney Theme Park!!)
- I was an obsessive NSYNC fan during the boy band years. lol.
- My favorite books are Pride and Prejudice, Kingdom Keepers, and The Notebook.
I tend to be a quiet person if I'm around people I don't really know, but when I'm around my friends and family I NEVER shut up. (They'll be the firsts to validate that! lol). I have to give a shout out to my best friends; Jeannette, Soddy, Sarsy, Erin, Willard, Lexi Couster, and Mom!
Most of all, thank you to all of you guys! Willy and I both really appreciate all of your help and support and please, continue to spread the word about kMw!
Peace Out,
Katie
